Purpose: The purpose of this experiment was to measure the amount of momentum prior to as well as after an inelastic collision using motion sensors and collision carts. Theory: If net external forces are ignored then the sum of the momenta of the two carts prior to a collision is the same as the sum of the momenta after collision. Procedure: A. Position each cart 15 centimeters from the motion sensor Click ‘start’ and gently push the carts and let them roll towards one another Collect data until the carts collide Press ‘stop’ B. Position each of the carts 15 centimeters from the motion sensors. Click start and push the carts letting them roll towards each other. Collect data until the carts have collided and stuck to one another. Click ‘stop’ C. Hold the cart 15 centimeters away from the motion sensors. Click start releasing the cart so that it rolls forward.

Unformatted text preview: • Data recording will commence when the cart collides with the bumper. • Click ‘stop’ after the cart rebounds from the collision. Uncertainty: A./B. Any uncertainty would have been caused by the track not being level giving one of the carts extra momentum. Also, if the participant gives one or the other carts too much of a push, it could skew the results. C. Uncertainty could have been caused by not using the same position for each of the trials. Conclusion: After determining the total amount of momentum of the carts before and after collisions our results in each of the trials exhibit the principles of conservation of momentum. This was that if the net forces were ignored the sum of the momenta of the two carts prior to collision is the same after the collision....
