Purpose: The purpose of this experiment was to measure the amount of momentum prior to as well as after an inelastic collision using motion sensors and collision carts. Theory: If net external forces are ignored then the sum of the momenta of the two carts prior to a collision is the same as the sum of the momenta after collision. Procedure: A. Position each cart 15 centimeters from the motion sensor Click ‘start’ and gently push the carts and let them roll towards one another Collect data until the carts collide Press ‘stop’ B. Position each of the carts 15 centimeters from the motion sensors.
