Overview The hardest and most detailed chapters are 2 and 6, and they will get some extra emphasis Review the study pages at the end of each chapter, quizzes, vocabulary, important people and their contributions o Freud, Pavlov, Watson, Skinner, Piaget, Chomsky, Vygotsky, Kohlberg, Erikson, Kubler-Ross, Binet Chapter 1 Overview of various schools and approaches to psychology and history of psych (summarized in blue box p.31- 32) (understand the different approaches, but don’t memorize all the people) The part on research methods (well summarized in colored boxes p.25, Be sure to understand the strengths and weaknesses of each) Chapter 2 (pg 58-88, Sections 2.1-2.4) Know the parts and structures of the brain and what they do Vocabulary What part of the brain goes with what activity? Know about the new research tools (Section 2.2) Review that brain study animation (for visual learners) -- although actual questions all come from the text Chapter 3 Don't pay any attention to the whole first part on genetics Peoples whose theories are important (In assignment). Know their stages and steps as well (Kohlberg pg 132, Kubler-Ross pg 140) Know Parenting Styles and Steps in Language Development Chapter 4 (Sections 4.1, 4.4-4.6) Focus on mental over biological (But pay some attention to the principles of gestalt organization and to the factors that confuse perception) Know how the brain draws meaning from sensory input (seeing is NOT believing) Chapter 5 (Entire Chapter except 220-223, Drug Chart pg 228-229) Sleep, the stages of sleep, sleep disorders Dreams and the different theories of what dreams are Different psychoactive drugs, what they do and how they work (memorize the type ie. stimulant, depressant, etc.) Understand the mechanism of how drugs work in the brain (If there’s time, review the assigned animations) Chapter 6 Know the terms and concepts of behavioral learning theory and alternate theories (Memorize accurate vocabulary, a lot of it) Chapter 7 Memory (Focus on mechanisms of memory and forgetting) Different types of memory (Understand how it works) Chapter 8 How intelligence is defined and measured (section 8.1) Gardner’s Theory (section 8.1) History of IQ Test, what they actually measure, and why they’re controversial Concepts, concept formation, Language development, context, denotation, connotation (section 8.2) Know what is considered normal, gifted, etc. Know what “Heuristics” are (pg 352) also about fixations and other barriers to problem solving (pg 454-455)
