Wed Feb 28,07 Constitution of 1845 (Texas joins the union) The Constitution of 1845 accompanied the petition of Texas for statehood in the Union. It drew on the Louisiana Constitution, the Constitution drafted in 1833 and the Constitution of the Republic. It was accepted on Dec 29, 1845. Constitution of 1861 The Secession Convention rewrote the Const. to ease the admission of Texas into the Confederacy. It adopted the Const. of 1845 with amendments forbidding the freeing of slaves and requiring state officials to swear loyalty to the Confederacy. Dred Scott Decision: In Texas you can’t free slaves, its against the const. 1866 Amendments Reconstruction after the Civil War resulted in the Convention of 1866 during which amendments were proposed to increase the number, power, and salaries of government officials. It also provided for many public improvements. It was never put into effect, and Texas continued under military rule. Const. of 1869
