Nebula formation.-The nebula flattens as it spins, heats up, and atoms, molecules, and particles within combine to form larger and larger bodies. C lic k t o b u y N O W ! Overall the initial chemical compositions of the nebula are similar to those in the sun 98% gaseous elements (H, He and noble gases), 1.5% ice (H 2 O, NH 3 , CH 4 ), 0.5% solid material. Each planets composition varies based on how quickly it was formed and its distance from the sun (temperature). The Formation of Planets C lic k t o b u y N O W ! P D F- X C ha ng e V ie w e r w w w .d o cu-tr ac k .c o m The Composition of Planets Inner Planets (Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars) formed from temperatures close to 1200 K. These high temperatures are thought to have prevented the accumulation of lighter elements (more depleted relative to cosmic abundances). These planets are dominated by iron and silicate minerals (ie. metal and rock). Compositions very unlike the initial solar cloud. Outer Planets (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune) Very different from the inner planets. Jupiter and Saturn are mostly hydrogen and helium, these are the gas giants. Uranus and Neptune contain larger percentages of water (ice), ammonia, methane, and carbon monoxide C lic k t o b u y N O W !
