Question one:
At a major psychiatric hospital, they want to examine the effect of two
classes of medication (
TCA
or tricyclic and
SSRI
, Selective Serotonin Reuptake
Inhibitor) on the treatment of depression among elderly (patients over the age of 60) and
younger adults (patients between the age of 20 and 30). There are 15 TCA type and 15
SSRI type of pills for the treatment of depression. They randomly choose three TCA and
three SSRI pills from the list of 15. 180 sixty year old patients and120 twenty to thirty
year old patients volunteered to participate in the study. They plan to use the Beck
Depression scale for measuring the level of depression among the patients.
Suppose that you were the statistician working for this hospital. Given the above
information, answer the following questions:
a)
How would you go about assigning the subjects to the different pills?
b)
Look up the Beck Depression Scale on the Internet and write a line or two about it
addressing what attributes it measures. Does it yield qualitative or quantitative
data?
c)
What data should they collect on the patients?
d)
What is the outcome variable and how should it be computed?
