Ch. 22 Notes “The biological species concept states that a species is a group of populations whose members have the potential to interbreed in nature and produce viable, fertile offspring; they do not breed successfully with other populations” Conditions on early earth that made life possible: - raw materials -suitable environment. -energy sources. Fossil evidence suggest early chronology: -earth formed 4.6 bya. -photosynthetic bacteria was formed 3.5 bya, thus life must have formed around 3.5 bya. -series of chemical reactions Stages: 1. reducing atmosphere oxidation and disrupted chemical bonds. 2. monomers combined to form polymers 3. polymers combined to create cell like structures (protobionic) 4. RNA is the first genetic material and enzyme. -Prokaryotes lived on Earth alone for 1.5 billion years. -Eukaryotic cells originated from communities of prokaryotic cells. -Multicellular forms arose 1.5 bya from descents of algae, plants, fungi, and animals. -The Cambrian explosion: a sudden increase in animal forms.
