Lecture 2 – 8/31/10 75% of the universe is dark energy and 21% is dark matter There is no scientific evidence as to what came before the big bang a) The age of the universe is estimated to be about 14 billion year Telescopes help see the universe backwards in time the farther things are Prehistoric astronomy a) Astronomy is the oldest profession universal to all cultures b) Astrology is falsifiable and not true and deals with predicting things- has confusions of cause and effects i) Astronomy, however, has origins in astrology c) Many ancient structures such as pyramids were built with astronomical alignment Eclipses- important in ancient cultures a) Saros cycle- way to predict eclipse by studying previous eclipses i) Not for the UNDERSTANDING of eclipses but the PREDICTION of sightings Moon a) Phases of the moon tell you where the sun is at i) Gibbous- almost full moon ii) Moon is waxing when it’s going to full and its waning when its decreasing towards new
