Lecture 5 – 9/9/10 Your never in the same place 2 times due to the orbits of the earth Humans can’t “destroy” the planets only large pieces of space objects Forecasting weather is a really hard problem especially locally Radioactive dating- determining the formation history of the earth using radioactive elements a) Many elements are very unstable and will decay when put on something like your finger b) Half life is used with radioactive elements- you want to use an element who’s half- life is appropriate to the relative age of what your trying to date When earthquakes happen they pass through different parts of the earth in different waves a) Allows us to get a 3D map of the interior of the earth b) When the waves are detected we can study the composition of the earth The earth is dynamic- earthquakes and volcanoes can transform land Two different kinds of waves through earth a) P-waves (primary)- longitudinal waves (compression is along the path traveled)
