Lecture 6 – 9/14/10 Greenhouse- Visible light that has shorter wavelengths comes inside the greenhouse and then it’s reradiated. Thermal infrared radiation can’t pass through the glass so it’s trapped inside warming the greenhouse. a) On earth the sun transmits light that warms the ground. The ground then reradiates the thermal infrared wavelengths but CO2 in the air absorbs the wavelengths heating the atmosphere. When an asteroid is on a collision towards earth, you want to hit it the farther it is away so it only requires a small nudge to change its course.
