Lecture 14 – 10/12/10 Total luminosity is all the area under the curve Atoms are mostly things concentrated in the center and spaced out Neils Bohr’s results that only certain wavelengths are emitted or absorbed in different energy levels is totally empirical Quantum revolution a) Revolution was necessary b) Einstein introduced a critical insight and came up with the photo-electric effect which would eventually become our TVs Photo-electric effect a) When EM radiation hits a piece of metal: i) Negatively charged particles are emitted ii) They are ejected by the light iii) The particles are electrons iv) Number emitted is proportional to intensity v) Energy of electrons is independent of intensity vi) Only light about a certain frequency (threshold) will kick off electrons vii) Energy of electrons increases as the frequency is greater Einstein- said light must act like a particle a) Einstein’s frequency condition- E=hf i) Energy is proportional to frequency b)
