Biology Lecture 19 We, as organisms, transform energy Potential energy is energy that is not yet expressed. Exists cause of its location and structure. Chemical energy is a type of potential energy that can be released to perform work Kinetic energy deals with movement Heat (thermal energy) deals with the random movement of molecules Thermodynamics is the study of energy transformations Open system is where energy can enter and leave the system. Organisms are open systems Closed system is where energy cannot come in or leave 1 st Law Energy cannot be created or destroyed but instead transferred and transformed 2 nd Law Every energy transformation increases the entropy (disorder) of the universe When energy is transformed, some of the potential energy is “lost” (unusable) in the form of heat. Heat is unusable to us because heat is random. We replace ordered forms of energy and convert it to less ordered forms (exergonic, spontaneous) A constant input of energy allows us to created ordered structures from less ordered materials
