Introduction I have compiled this portfolio as a way to show my growth as a student and a writer. I have included several works of my writing from the Fall 2009 semester of English 190. Through my portfolio, I will be able to prove that I have gained an understanding of the entire writing practice from brainstorming to the final draft. My ability to synthesize ideas of others into an arguable essay will be seen as well. I will also be able to show how I can properly cite, quote, and reference ideas to effectively argue, defend, or criticize a position. This portfolio will also show how I have developed my voice in my writing. This portfolio proves that I have an understanding of the material and techniques we have learned. Though I came from humble and simple beginnings as a novice writer, English 190 has allowed me to become a stronger writer with an effective voice.

Visual Rhetorical Analysis: “Gatorade’s Lightning in a Bottle” My visual rhetorical analysis was an essay that proved my ability to understand and follow through with the entire writing process. From my brainstormed ideas, pre-writing, first- draft, peer-edit, revisions, and the finished essay, it is evident that I have made the effort to follow the entire writing process. I made intelligent observations of the Gatorade advertisement and discussed the ethos, pathos, logos, and Kairos of the magazine advertisement. I also had an effective thesis that properly set up my entire analysis of the Gatorade commercial. My thesis was “The ad uses effective photography skills and appeals to the reader’s ethos, pathos, and logos to effectively convey its purpose.” This paper was one of my strongest assignments because I spent the most time on this essay and I was interested in analyzing this particular advertisement.
