Wertman, Brittany bmw5195@psu.edu Section 1 August 31, 2010 Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance was truly shocking how accurate the information was. Many students go through college wishing for a teacher who doesn’t take attendance or the “easy” classes, so that you don’t have to work as hard. In the end it’s those teachers who are more likely to have students who strive to succeed. The college students are more likely to attend class or strive for a good grade when grades are actually being recorded. If grades were nonexistent, what would the challenge be of learning new things? In the story, when the teacher decided to withhold the student’s grades, all the students began to worry, even the “slackers”. The less you know about your grade the more you try to suck up to the teacher or strive for those “brownie points”, hoping the teacher notices your enthusiasm to learn. No student truly wishes to fail; some just need that extra push to keep their head in the game. In the story about “The Best Graduation Speech”, it is completely true – what teenager
