It emphasizes that populations, not individuals, evolve. A population consists of all the members of the same species that live in one location. In a population of sexually reproducing individuals, the various alleles of all the genes in all the individuals make up a gene pool for the population. The gene pool of a population can be described in terms of allele frequencies. When there have been no changes in the gene pool, genetic equilibrium occurs and evolution does not.
