Marks for the questions are shown on the margin. Use of steam table, supplied with the question paper, is permitted. Clearly write your Section Number on the cover page of your answer script. 1. (a) A steam power plant operates on the ideal regenerative Rankine cycle. The boiler operates at a pressure of 60 bar while that for the condenser is 0.15 bar. 20% of the boiler steam mass flow rate is extracted prematurely at 4.15 bar from the turbine for feedwater heating. Remaining steam enters the condenser at a quality of 84.46%. Draw a T-s diagram of the cycle clearly indicating the state points across the components. Neglecting pump work, determine: i) heat rejected by the condenser (kJ/kg); ii) work output from the turbine (kJ/kg) and iii) cycle efficiency. [2+5+4+5=16] Without increasing the turbine inlet temperature, if the plant is to be operated at a higher boiler pressure of 75 bar, what are the expected difficulties, if any. A qualitative logical answer is adequate.
