Chapter 7 The Organization of American Schools What is a School? -1) where young people go to learn and develop intellectually, personally, and socially. -2) a physical place -3) Social Institution: an organization with established structures and rules designed to promote certain goals. -goals are to promote both students’ growth and development and the well-being of a country and its citizens. - school district: administrative unit within a state, defined by geographical boundaries and legally responsible for the public education of children within those boundaries The Organization of Schools Personnel - administrators: individuals responsible for the day-to-day operation of a school - principal: the individual given ultimate administrative responsibility for the school’s operation -guidance counselors, psychologists, nurses, secretaries, media center specialists, custodians, cafeteria workers, etc. -Teachers are the heart of any effective school The Physical Plant -Elementary schools: parking, playground, drop off zone -Middle/Junior and High School: athletic facilities, student parking -classrooms privacy and sanctuary (movable walls are usually resisted by teachers) Organization of the Curriculum -curriculum: what teachers teach and what students learn -centered around learning goals -organization of grades and subjects -Factors considered when organizing schools 1) developmental characteristics of students 2) economics and politics - Development: the physical changes in children as well as changes in the way they think and relate to their peers that result from maturation and experience.
