General Motors was founded on September 16, 1908 in Flint, Michigan as a holding company for Buick. The co-founders of GM were William C. Durant and Charles Stewart Mott. Both of these men started out in the horse drawn carriage industry. In 1909 Durant brought in Cadillac, Elmore, Oakland, and several brands. These brands joined together to form what is known today as General Motors Company. Today, the CEO of GM is Dan Akerson. (Marketing Teacher, 2011) The location of the company’s corporate headquarters is in Detroit, Michigan and is named the Renaissance Center. The “RenCen” is an office building that houses 6,000+ GM employees. The RenCen underwent a renovation in 2003 costing $500,000,000. (About GM, 2011) The company’s mission statement is “G.M. is a multinational corporation that engages in socially responsible operations worldwide. It is dedicated to provide products and services of such quality that our consumers will receive superior value while our employees and business partners will share n our success and our stock holders will receive a sustained superior return on their investment.”( About GM .2011, April). The vision of the company is to be the world leader in transportation products and related services. GM states, "We will earn our customers enthusiasm through continuous improvement driven by the integrity, teamwork, and the innovation of GM people."(About GM, 2011)
