December 2, 2010 Ms. Amanda Hedrick ENGL 1101 Instructor Ms. Hedrick, Over the last semester you have made a major difference in my ability to write in a way I never knew before. In the beginning, all I knew about writing is what I learned in high school (which wasn’t much except how to format a piece of writing). Through out this semester, the combination between Hendrich’s “Thank You For Arguing” and your teaching and advisement, I have learned how to use tools such as Pathos, Logos and Ethos. My original portfolio #1 assignment which consisted of a multisystem question was the ultimate goal to answer by the end of the semester. My multisystem question was “How can I stay on topic in a formal writing assignment?” I believe through out the semester I have improved greatly on this. Writing essay #2 about Joe Klein’s article “Why Legalizing Marijuana Makes Sense” helped me really learn how to both grab an audience’s attention and use and argument to get the audience on my side.
