GREEN CHEMISTRY -Rachel Carson – “silent spring” : first person to point towards the down side of chemistry. DDT was used in excess and bioaccumulated in environment. DDT was thought to interfere with the egg laying abilities of birds. People overreacted and banned it. But malaria is a big problem. -PBBs used as insulating agents in electronics. -Dioxins, byproducts of some kind of industrial process. Different species react differently dioxins. 1. Prevention 2. Atom Economy : production of fewest possible by-products; A + B products + assorted crap. 3.Less Hazardous Chemical Synthesis 4.Designing Safer Chemicals 5. Safer Solvents and Auxiliaries 6. Design for Energy Efficiency : chemical reactions require heat 7. Use of renewable feedstock 8. Reduce Derivatives 9. Catalysis : better catalist = saving energy 10. Design for Degradation 11. Real time analysis for pollution prevention 12. Inherently safer chemistry for Accident prevention - Henry Ford : used soy protein cross-linked with formaldehyde to produce a plastic, which was used instead of metal for cars. -caseine-formaldehyde is also a plastic material which was used in the past, but never considered “green” -soy oil can produce polyols, which can make polyurethane . E.g soy polyurethane insulation ; polyurethane derived from soy oil rather than petroleum is greener. -soy protein can be used to make glue. Most glues are derived from petroleum.
