Grace Kim TA Stephanie Chan Doc1 B018 Oct. 17, 2008 Weekly Reading Journal Entries (Week #3) – “Black Wealth/White Wealth” A majority of African Americans are seen to be of lower rank and do not have the same opportunities as whites to come out from this impoverished position. Oliver and Shapiro suggest the main cause of the racial inequality is based on race and class. Race and class can be determined in one prospect as to be influenced by wealth. However, African Americas were at a disadvantage to furthering their wealth because of the racial difficulties they faced for being black skinned. Some of the aspects African Americans were particularly discriminated against in were the ability to receive loans in order to buy homes, receive welfare and receive tax benefits.
