This is the underlying pathophysiology to alcohol related liver injury. Acidosis causes hypotension secondary to decreased effectiveness of the catecholamines. Acidosis caused by renal disease is secondary to a decrease excretion of hydrogen ions. A decrease in oxaloacetate results in hypoglycemia. Metabolic alkalosis results from the loss of chloride and the retention of bicarb.
