GLG111 Study Guide Spring 2009 Chapter 9: Geologic Time, p.238-269 Define the following terms: Principle of Original Horizontality: layered strata are deposited horizontal or nearly horizontal to the Earth’s surface. (layers of sedimentary rocks to be relatively flat and straight across, horizontal sheets) Principle of Superposition: in a sequence of undisturbed layered rocks, the oldest rocks are on the bottom Unconformity: a surface between two layers that were not laid down in an unbroken sequence Disconformity: an unconformity in which the upper set of layers overlies an erosional surface developed on an undeformed, still horizontal lower set of beds Noncomformity: an unconformity in which the upper beds of sedimentary rocks overlie metamorphic or igneous rocks. Angular Unconformity: unconformity in which the upper beds overlie lower beds that have been folded and then eroded to a more or less even plane. (lower beds are deformed above the erosion line rocks are horizontal) Geologic time scale:
