Distinction between hiring and selection: i. Hiring occurs when offers of employment are given with no evaluation of the applicant's job-related qualifications (e.g.: when a family member/friend of an employee or client is given a job) ii. May also occur when a company desperately needs to fill unskilled or semi- skilled positions as well as when there is a need to fill openings within a very short period of time a. Want to hire the best employees to increase productivity b. Cost: the cost of a lost employee fluctuates from 25% of the annual salary up to 150% and beyond. i. Even worse, more than 30% of all business failures are the result of negligent hiring practices ii. Bad hires are bad for business a.
