Anti-Depressants Biological Basis for Depression A. Began about 70 years ago when people noticed that drugs used for high-blood pressure (“recurpine”) worked by eliminating NE in the brain 1. Cause the vesicles to open and not seal back up, so they couldn’t store any transmitter 2. When people were out of NE in their brain, they were depressed B. When drugs were taken to increase NE in brain (the drugs that treated tuberculosis) they decreased depression 1. CORRELATION : increase NE = less depression; decrease NE = more depression Model of Behavioral Depression (in rats) A. The reason it’s called “behavioral” is because you can’t “see” depression B. Reproduces every vegetative symptom in humans C. Make a rat depressed through “learned helplessness” 1. Biological versus learned theory of depression… D. PROCEDURE: 1. “uncontrollable stress model of depression” a. administer major stress in rats (shock) i. There are two groups -Experimental Group (avoidance escape group)
