PSYCHOPHARM INTRO CONTINUED Parasympathetic Nervous System -activates the gastric system -has to do with sleep -uses Ach Ach blocker -Atropine -used a lot in surgery because it dries up nasal passages and suppress salivation -simulates a sympathetic activator -stops you from choking to death in surgery Atropine comes from atropa belladonna ("beautiful lady") made from the deadly nightshade plant which is because they dilate the pupil -everything else being equal, the larger the pupil the more attractive someone seems -increases respiration At higher doses it has a hard time crossing the blood/brain barrier but some does eventually cross -high doses affects the brains -causes loss of memory, exhaustion, confusion , loss of focus Muscarinic Ach blockers! Psychedelic Scopalamine -easily crosses the blood/brain barrier -causes exhaustion is the brother of Serotonin agonist, muscarinic blockers Scopalamine -atropine = the effect of scopalamine on CNS Plants that have atropine and scopalamine -heinbane, mandrake, devil's apple, jimson weed
