Chi-square tests are used when the variables used are nominal, rather than scale or rank/order. These type of tests are used when people give answers that aren’t numerical, as we’ve seen with scales from 1-100 for instance. A common type of answer that a person can give for a chi-square test is a yes or no. Obviously their choices can only be one or the other.
