Module Overview In this module, we will ask ourselves the question, "Why do we study Western Civilization?" This is an important inquiry that will make us think not only about the structure of this course but also about Western Civilization's significance for a deeper understanding of world politics, society, and culture. To do this, we will have to unpack the very meaning of "Western Civilization." We will consider how the concept has developed as an historical category. We will study its history within university systems, examining the arguments of its supporters and critics. Finally, we will ask ourselves about the strengths and limitations of focusing on Western Civilization in university courses. Required Readings Peter Stearns.
