Week 2 Intercultural Communications 2 Intercultural Communications Global and intercultural communications have become an increasing reality since the advent of the Internet, email and other forms of instant communication. Therefore, it is important to bear in mind the differences among the different cultures. The differences go deeper than the to-may-to/to-mah-to debate. Things such as language, gestures, colors, date annotation, and manners can either help or hinder business communications. The purpose of this paper is to explore the various cultural differences between the US and the UK. But what exactly are cultural differences? First, culture can be defined as “the shared system of symbols, beliefs, attitudes, values, expectations and norms for behavior” (Bovee & Thill, 2007, p. 8). Therefore, it stands to reason that cultural differences are ways in which one group of people differs from another. This can be true even among people from the same country or those who share the same language. Language and accents are usually the first differences people notice between Americans and their British counterparts. Even among the English, accents vary.
