No More Like Matthias: The Apostolic Fathers Look Inward Apostolic Fathers The generation after the New Testament era; leaders claimed to be students of Jesus’ disciples/apostles (not fathers of the apostles!) With the death of the apostles, new leaders emerged and had to confront practical questions. No longer could appeal to people who had been with Jesus. Some of the writings were considered Scripture temporarily. Writings include I Clement, Epistle of Barnabas, Shepherd of Hermas, Martyrdom of Polycarp, Letters of Ignatius, and the Didache. Ignatius, Bishop of Antioch Seven epistles, 110-117 Attacked docetism Real presence in the Eucharist (term he coins) o Medicine of immortality (for salvation) o Used the word “catholic” (universal) for the Church Monarchical Episcopate: Growing Role of the Bishop o Move away from collegial leadership and prophets o Centralized leadership to fight heresy (shun divisions, follow the bishop) o Where the bishop is, there is the Church- mystical presence
