Account for the widespread and enthusiastic reception for Thomas Paine's "Common Sense". “Common Sense” was published in 1776 and quickly became one of the most influential pamphlets ever written. It wasn’t long until “Common Sense” soon became a best seller. It only took a few months to sell 120,000 copies. Unformatted text preview: defeat the British. After the U.S. signed the Treaty of Alliance with France in 1778, France formally recognized the United States and came to their military aid. The French navy was hugely beneficial to the war and ultimately helped end the war at Yorktown in 1781. The French even organized the Treaty of Paris in 1783 which formally ended the war and established the United States as a sovereign nation. Without this military and financial aid from France the United States would have been put in a very hard position to win the Revolution and ultimately may not have won the war at all....
