GLY 6246 , SECT. 19515 Spring Semester 2010   ADVANCED ENVIRONMENTAL GEOCHEMISTRY   TIME: 7:10 - 10:00 P.M.   PLACE: PS 337   CREDIT: 3 credits   DATES: January 14 to April 29, 2010 excluding March 11, 2010   INSTRUCTOR: David Warburton , Ph.D., PG Physical Science 356 (561) 297-3312 FAX (561) 297-2745 e-mail [email protected]   PURPOSE OF COURSE: Students will become familiar with the principles of geochemistry, and specifically to their application to water on the earth. Properties of water are discussed at length, and these properties are used in an examination and explanation of environmental problems related to the geochemical behavior of aqueous phase constituents. The problems examined involve hydrogeology, contamination of surface and underground terrestrial water, and coastal waters. It is expected that students completing the course will be conversant with methods and capabilities of geochemical analysis, and with the jargon of geochemistry, and will be able to better understand the advantages of applying geochemical methods to problems they will encounter.   PREREQUISITES: One year of college chemistry and admission to a graduate program in the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science at FAU, or permission of instructor.   TEXT: Lecture notes will be posted on the department website as Adobe PDF files. Additional readings will be placed on reserve in the library, or from online sources, where appropriate.   EVALUATION: One midterm examination will be worth 18% of the total grade. A cumulative final examination , worth 27% of the total grade, will be given. Tests will be announced at least one week in advance. It is the student's
