  Outline 17 3/26/03   1. Coal + Cylcothems      Accumulate abundant plant remains  under water in coastal or           deltaic swamp for long time      Peat    Lignite  (brown coal)   Bituminous Coal    Anthracite      Coal in Pennsylvanian (Carboniferous) found in cyclothems           ~5-20 m thick with 8-10 thin cyclic units in each,           50-60 cylcothems present in Penn. in Laurentia, implying           each one 0.75-1.0 mill. yrs.  Units include channel sandstone           at base, shales above, coal , shales + thin limestones,            thick fossiliferous limestones with thin black shale, finally           thick shale at top, often channeled at top.      Represent a transgressive - regressive  cycle repeated many           times      Possible causes  for this: 1) Glacial
