Psychology Structure of the mental health system Mental hospital : care for those who can’t care for themselves. Brief (2-4 weeks) hospitalizations for acute psychotic episodes General Hospital : Most psychiatric inpatient stays. Sometimes in a special psychiatric ward. Nursing home : older chronic mental patients. Quality of living conditions varies. Few, if any, special treatment personnel Halfway house : provides transition to general community. May help seek employment and place to live. Community mental health centers : free of low-cost services. Activities aimed at preventing psychological problems where possible. Private offices : preferred by those who can afford them. Structure of the mental health system Psychiatrist : M.D. with psychiatry training and residency. Can work in any setting, but most choose hospitals or private practice. Can prescribe drugs (only one who can give drugs) Clinical psychologist : doctorate in psychology with training in research and clinical practice. Many employed in universities in addition to private practice. Counseling Psychologist : doctorate in psychology. Less research and more clinical emphasis. More likely to see patients without a mental disorder. Counselors : Master’s Degree in counseling. Likely to work in a school or institution helping people deal with school-or job-related problems. Psychiatric Social Workers : Master’s in social work and training in dealing with ppl with psychological problems often visit people at home. Psychiatric Nurse : Bachelor’s or master’s in nursing. Usually work in hospitals and may conduct psychotherapy sessions. Neurological vs. psychiatric
