Section: KIN 1223 Names: Unit 3 Lab Unit 3 Integration Working in groups of 4 or 5, complete the following activities and questions by rotating through the stations. Each student should be the subject and observer at least once. Turn in one packet per group, and all packets must be turned in by the end of lab to receive credit. Section A: Reflexes Materials: 1 reflex hammer, 1 pen light Activity 1: Patellar Reflex The patellar reflex is a stretch reflex. The purpose of a stretch reflex is to maintain posture and equilibrium by contracting a muscle in response to a quick stretch. Synergists and antagonist muscle work together to stabilize the joint after a disrupting stimulus. 1. The subject sits in a chair, with the right leg crossed over the left, and both legs relaxed. 2. The observer locates the patella on the subject’s right leg. 3. The observer finds the patellar tendon just below the middle of the patella. 4. The observer uses the blunt end of the reflex hammer to tap gently on the subject’s patellar tendon and observes the reflex. 5.
