What are examples of applied cultural anthropology being used to resolve social issues? The first example is Nestlé Baby Formula Controversy in the early 1970's and 80's the Nestlé Corporation was trying to sell baby formula to third world countries to increase its market share. Nestlé's opponents argued about the possible increased health risk to infants. Nestlé formula must be mixed with pure water, which is something most third world countries don't have. Because they were unable to get clean water, the mothers began to mix the formula with dirty contaminated water causing infant illness and mortality from dehydration, intestinal infections, and diarrhea. Luckily UNICEF and the World Health Organization stepped in to create a set of guidelines making sure that what Nestlé was doing was ethical. It wasn't until 1984 that Nestlé Corporations finally agreed to enforce the guidelines. Van Esterik was also a key contributor in helping with the Nestlé controversy.
