Children’s Misconceptions about Sound 1. Children’s Misconceptions about Science http://www.eskimo.com/~billb/miscon/opphys.html o Loudness and pitch of sounds are confused with each other. o You can see and hear a distant event at the same moment. o The more mass in a pendulum bob, the faster it swings. o Hitting an object harder changes its pitch. o In a telephone, actual sounds are carried through the wire rather than electrical pulses. o Human voice sounds are produced by a large number of vocal chords. o Sound moves faster in air than in solids (air is "thinner" and forms less of a barrier). o Sound moves between particles of matter (in empty space) rather than matter. o In wind instruments, the instrument itself vibrates not the internal air column. o As waves move, matter moves along with them. o The pitch of whistles or sirens on moving vehicles is changed by the driver as the vehicle passes. o The pitch of a tuning fork will change as it "slows down", (i.e. "runs" out of energy) 2. o In wind instruments, the instrument itself vibrates (not the internal air column). o Music is strictly an art form; it has nothing to do with science. o Sound waves are transverse waves (like water and light waves). o Matter moves along with water waves as the waves move through a body of water. o When waves interact with a solid surface, the waves are destroyed. o In actual telephones, sounds (rather than electrical impulses) are carried through the wires. o Ultrasounds are extremely loud sounds. o Megaphones create sounds. o Noise pollution is annoying, but it is essentially harmless. 3. Bad Physics: Misconceptions Spread by K-6 Graders http://amasci.com/miscon/miscon4.html#sound o Sound travels better through solids? No. Many elementary textbooks say that sound travels better through solids and liquids than through air, but they are incorrect. In fact, air, solids, and liquids are nearly transparent to sound waves. Some authors use an experiment to convince us differently: place a solid ruler so it touches both a ticking watch and your ear, and the sound becomes louder. Doesn't this prove that wood is better than air at conducting sound? Not really, because sound has an interesting property not usually mentioned in the books: waves of sound traveling inside a solid will bounce off the
