GUS 1025: World Urban Patterns (CRN 012592)  Section: 001 Department of Geography and Urban Studies, Temple University Fall 2009 Instructor: Dr. Susan Lucas Email: [email protected] Office: 340 Gladfelter Hall Course Description This course provides an introduction to cities around the world. We begin by asking basic questions about the nature of cities and the different approaches to studying them. We explore factors driving urban growth and how this growth affects urban environments. We examine questions of social organization and governance and topics related to planning and the future of the city. There are no pre-requisites for this course. Course Information Class meeting times : Lectures: Building: BARTON HALL CLASSROOMS Room: 102 Office Hours: Tuesday and Thursday 1:00 – 3:00 pm and 5:00 – 6:00 pm Please note I will only be on campus Tuesday and Thursday. Required Course Text : Stanley D. Brunn, Maureen Hays-Mitchell and Donald Zeigler. Cities of the World (4 th Edition). Publisher: Rowman and Littlefield. Assigned reading : Students are expected to complete all assigned reading before class. The readings are designed to complement lectures. Assigned readings are listed on page 7 of this syllabus. Class notes : Class notes will not be given out to students who have missed class under any circumstances. Blackboard resources: Lecture outlines, diagrams and blank maps for use in class are provided via the course page on Blackboard. Class materials and exam outlines will not be handed out in class. Students are responsible for obtaining copies of class materials and exam outlines. Students should make sure they can log onto Blackboard and the course page. Course Communications: Information regarding this course will be disseminated to students via TU email and Blackboard. Announcements regarding the availability of class materials, exam dates, changes to the syllabus and cancelled classes will be made on the course page. Students are therefore encouraged to check the course page frequently. Announcements and all other email communications will only be sent
