Aric Martino Communication Research 4/29/11 Final Essay In society today, people use paradigms and research methods on a daily basis without knowing so. It is important to know about paradigms and research methods because without them, people wouldn’t understand how and why people know what they know. The purpose of this essay is to discuss paradigms and research methods and how they are important in communication research, as well as defining paradigms and elaborating on a specific research method of my choice. First, I will discuss the three paradigms, which are discovery/social scientific, interpretive, and critical. Next, I will provide a more detailed explanation on survey. Lastly, I will provide an example of a survey. There are three paradigms in communication research, and they are discovery/social scientific, interpretive, and critical. (Huston, and Merrigan, 2009) state that “Sometimes, researchers separate paradigms into two types: epistemological and ontological. Epistemological paradigms address the question, “How can a thing be known?” Ontological paradigms address the question, “What is the thing?””The epistemology of discovery/social scientific is knowledge is obtained through the process of discovery, and knowledge is testable through logical and empirical methods.
