I am an African American born and raised in Mississippi. I am a hardworking man who just lives day by day. I was born into slavery that has been colonized since the 1500's. I was inherited by Thomas Jefferson, who is the third President of the United States, in 1801, and moved to Virginia. I am writing this to let everyone know the struggles of everyday life as a slave. Life as a slave is miserable. I work all day from sun up to sun down. I wake up after only acquiring a couple of hours of restless sleep on a hard damp muddy floor, where rain leaks through the straw made ceiling, just to go out to the field and plant and pick tobacco plants all day long. I get no gratitude for what I do, just get beatings from working too slow. The living quarters were built by people who have no respect for us. They built them with as little gratitude as possible. The roof is barley held up by straw, the floors are mud, and when it as little gratitude as possible....
