ETHNIC GROUPS AND DISCRIMINATION 2 I am primarily German, and that is the ethnic group of which I am writing. As far as I know I do not identify with more than one ethnic group. Most of my family is dead, or I do not communicate with them, so I do not have the benefit of asking them our family’s ethnic history. I remember talking with my grandmother as a child asking her what our family’s ethnic heritage was, and her reply was German. German, is the ethnic group I most identify with as well as the group I want to learn more about. Immigration It has been determined through my research that the Germans immigrated to The United States, in search of an improved standard of living. “Religiously-motivated emigrant groups typically left the Old World in the 18th and early 19th centuries. In the intolerant environment of Europe, they had not been permitted to shape their own community life.” German immigrants though that the religious freedoms offered in the United States would make for far better living conditions, in regard that they could practice their own religious beliefs, instead of the beliefs that the government forced upon them. There were a number of politically motivated emigration waves in which millions of Germans fled German to come to America. “In the 1830’s,
