Autobiography and Identity: Assignment topics Assignments should not exceed 2000 words. Please type these, using double space. (See English Studies “Student Guide” for information about layout, referencing and marking criteria.) Remember, you should research the topic beyond the prescribed and recommended readings. In other words, your bibliography should indicate that you have consulted other pertinent books and journal articles. (For the latter, consult the university library for books and journals, the municipal library as well as Google Scholar, JStor, Ebsco Host and Project Muse.) Assignment 1 Due date: 7 April 2011 Select one of the following: 1. What is memory? How important is memory to identity? What are the difficulties concerning memory which autobiographers and critics of autobiography have to confront? Discuss in relation to the Confessions of either St. Augustine or Rousseau. 2. In his Confessions Augustine clearly seeks absolution from God.
