Nutritionally adequate and safe foods are readily available. Foods can be acquired in a socially acceptable way. Food Insecure Household Limited or uncertain ability to acquire or consume an adequate quality or sufficient quantity of food in socially acceptable ways Hunger in the United States In 2006: More that 35.5 million people lived food insecure households 12.8 million are children (17.4% of all children) Historical Background 1930s - government began purchasing commodities and started the Food Stamps Program 1947- National School Lunch Act began 1960s Expanded the Food Stamps Program, School Lunch and School Breakfast, Food for Seniors, initiated WIC 1980 Spending on antipoverty programs was reduced 1996 Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act further reduced spending for food stamps 2008 Food Stamps Program re-named as Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) Healthy People 2020 Nutrition and Weight Status Objective 12 Eliminate very low food security among children Target: 0.2 percent 2008 Baseline: 1.3% of households with children had very low food security among children in 2008 Healthy People 2020 Nutrition and Weight Status Objective 13 Reduce household food insecurity and in so doing reduce hunger Target: 6.0 percent 2008 Baseline: 14.6 percent of households were food insecure in 2008.
