Ledwell 1 Caitlin Ledwell Moseley ENG 102-2327 04/14/2020 Understanding Minnie Wright In “Trifles” by Susan Glaspell, Mr. Hales, a neighboring famer, comes to visit the Wrights one day and discovers from Mrs. Wright that Mr. Wright was killed in their home. Mr. Hales goes to get his wife, the county attorney, Sherriff Peters, and Mrs. Peters to bring them back to Wright’s. Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Peters discern from the evidence lying around the Wright’s home that Mrs. Wright murdered her husband, but they believe she had a reason for committing this act. Minnie Wright, formerly Minnie Foster, was the wife of John Wright and says she was asleep beside him when he was strangled to death with a rope. She was once carefree and joyful but since she has been married her life has turned cold. Mrs. Wright murders her husband because he strangled her pet canary and emotionally abused her throughout their marriage. One can deduce that Minnie killed her husband by her actions when Mr. Hale came to visit. Obviously, she knew her husband was dead and yet she had not notified the authorities herself. When Mr. Hale came to visit it was apparent that Mrs. Wright was acting strangely and when he asks where her husband is, she tells him he is dead upstairs. After Mr. Hale found Mr. Wright’s body, he begins to question Mrs. Wright about how her husband was killed, “'Who did this, Mrs Wright?' said Harry. He said it business-like—and she stopped
