Rhonda Riley October 11, 2009 Diversity in Communication (COMM/315) Individual Assignment: Step Outside Your World Analysis Describe the activity they chose and why? As stated in the week two syllabus, I select an activity that placed me outside of my normal environment by choosing to rent a cane for the blind and decided to take a walk to my neighborhood shopping complex. We decided that my daughter would walk behind me and act as if she was just another person walking across the street to make sure that I was safe. What type of place did you choose to experience and why? My daughter and I drove to the Albertson’s Market on Farm and Durango and parked across the street in the Walgreen’s parking lot. I dressed casually in jeans and tennis shoes and had on dark sun glasses with my white cane with a red streak for the blind. My purpose for choosing this activity was because I wanted to see how helpful individuals would treat people with disabilities. What did you observe? My first encounter was with a teenager while crossing the street to get to the Albertson’s; he asked me if I needed assistance getting across the street, I gladly accepted and he held my elbow and escorted me to the other side. Once I reached the shopping center on the other side, I walked with my stick to the Blockbuster
