METHODS Part A Preparation of Methane by reduction of Chloroform. 10 g of Zinc dust particle was added into a 50 ml round bottomed flask mounted in a ring stand. 10 ml of Ethanol and 10 ml of water was added to the round bottomed flask. The flask was fitted with a rubber stopper and delivery tube for collection of the gas over the water. 5 ml of Chloroform was added to 1ml of 10% copper sulphate solution. *NOTES: The reaction took several minute to start. When the reaction is rapid, the flask is cooled in a pan of cold water.

At least 6 test tubes of Methane were collected by keeping the test tubes inverted over the water after the air in the flask has been displaced. Preparation of Ethene Rocksil Wool was placed at the bottom of the test tube and 8-10 drops of Ethanol were dropped until the Rocksil Wool has been soaked up with Ethanol. About 1 g of Aluminium Oxide was placed halfway along the tube. A cork and a delivery tube were fitted to the test tube. Then Aluminium Oxide was heated with a gentle flame. 6 test tubes of Ethene were collected by displacement of water method. Preparation of Ethyne

2 or 3 small pieces of Calcium dicarbide were placed in a test tube and all the apparatus for the collection of Ethyne were arranged. 2 or 3 drops of water were added at a time. At least 6 test tubes of Ethyne were collected by displacement of water. Part B Characterization Tests for Methane, Ethene and Ethyne 5 sets of tubes which every set of tube consist of 3 test tubes that containing Methane, Ethene and Ethyne was prepared. Each test tube were categorized with the name set 1A, set 1B, set 2A, set 2B and set 2C. For set 1A and 1B 1ml of a 4% solution of Bromine was added in Carbon Tetrachloride. All test tubes were fitted with a stopper.

Set 1A was placed in a drawer while set 1B was placed under a bright source of light (preferably sunlight) for 15 minutes. The results were observed.
