OUTLINE FORMAT CLAIM SPEECH Name: Andrew Scott Topic : Electric Vehicles Main Claim : Electric vehicles (EV’s) are a competitive alternative to vehicles powered by intern- al combustion engines (ICE’s). Definitions : -An electric vehicle (EV), also referred to as an electric drive vehicle, uses one or more electric motors for propulsion. -The internal combustion engine is an engine in which the combustion of a fuel (normally a fossil fuel) occurs with an oxidizer (usually air) in a combustion chamber. Justification Secondary or Supporting Claims 1. EV’s are a time saver compared to ICE vehicles. A. EV’s can be charged at home during the night, no need to wait in line at the pumps. B. In many states EV’s are allowed to make use of carpool lanes with only 1 occupant, reducing commute times. According to the California Air resources board, “California law allows single-occupant use of [carpool] lanes by qualifying clean alternative fuel vehicles. ...which includes elec- tric vehicles.” 2. EV’s offer an economic advantage over traditional combustion engines.
