STEPS IN THE MEDICAL BILLING PROCESS 2 Steps in the Medical Billing Process In the medical billing process there are ten steps that take place. In steps one through four the visit to the office takes place. This is when the patients preregister; establish a financial responsibility for the visit, the patient checks in, and then the patient checks out. In the step five through seven the claim takes place. The review of coding compliance, checking billing compliance, and the preparing and transmission of claims takes place. Steps eight through ten are the post-claim process. These steps monitor payer adjudication, generate patient statements, and follow up patient payments and handle collections. All of these steps are very important to a medical office to help move things along in a nice orderly fashion. Step one is where the patient preregisters. The two main tasks that are handled with this step are the scheduling and updates of appointment and the collection of preregistration demographic and insurance information. If the patient calls to make an appointment over the phone the scheduler will ask for basic personal and insurance information. If a patient is returning to the office they are then asked the reason for the visit so the allotted amount of time
