Peterson 1 Sam Peterson ENG 102 Unit 2 Assignment Locally owned businesses that appear to compete with huge, and hugely successful, chain stores must find creative ways to both market themselves and create a niche within their communities. The emphasis on “shopping locally” is not enough to drive consumers to do so; local needs and specialty services must be met and offered in ways that larger stores cannot. For a smaller local chain like dvd rental Visart Video to compete with live streaming from Netflix, first stop big-dollar movie rental chainss like Blockbuster, and the cheap, fast-food model of Redbox, it must define itself on local terms. Last year’s closure of Visart in Chapel Hill points to a failure – not against big-box businesses – but a failure to keep a finger on the pulse of its community, and meet its most basic service needs. There are some simple, cost-effective solutions that can be implemented, that would benefit not only Visart - they would profit the community at large, thus creating the kind of interdependence necessary for long-term survival of a local business.
