Theory X managers would use a much more authoritarian style of leadership because they believe most people must be coerced, controlled, directed, or threatened with punishment to get them to work or that the average human prefers to be directed and wish to avoid any responsibility. Theory Y managers believe the average human being learns to not only accept but to seek responsibility. Workers will exercise self-direction and self-control in the service of objectives to which they are committed. 3. Would you describe yourself as a Theory X or a Theory Y manager? Why? I would describe myself as a Theory Y manager because I do not believe in the authoritarian style of managing. I do believe that the average human being learns not only to accept but to seek responsibility under proper conditions. 5. Define the following leadership styles: autocratic, laissez-faire, and democratic.
